Home Office Extra Ordinary Meeting – 2 July 2026.
An extra ordinary meeting was called following the announcement on June 26, 2026 that the Home Office will expand occupancy form the 800 cap to 1245 year-round and will extend its site operation a RAF Wethersfield beyond April 2027.
– The Government announced 20 hotel closures – two of which are in Essex.
– The Home Office will extend planning in Wethersfield beyond April 2027, no idea yet what planning mechanism will be used and for how long, but will advise once known.
– The Home Office had a meeting today with the Leader of Essex County Council who has pressed for a review on mini-buses transporting service users into local towns/cities. The HO advised that this is a condition of the current SDO however they will review this potentially by trying to move certain facilities delivered in those towns, to on site instead.
– Rumours that the site may move to a 1700 capacity – the Home Office advised that they will utilise all 1245 bed spaces currently. Any further increase could neither be confirmed or denied in the future.
– The operational cap of 800 was an appropriate number however the surge capacity was used last summer. The Home Office advised there are still some further checks to be made to ensure this level of occupancy could be used all year round.
– The Home Office confirmed that the operation will remain as a reception centre and no decisions would be served on site, good or bad.
– A councillor challenged the Governments decision as when the first SDO for the site was laid in Parliament 3 years ago – 10 Labour MP’s set aside this motion including the current PM. Why has the Government again made a complete U-turn? An SDO is for temporary planning, however this is no longer temporary nor an emergency for Crown planning routes, and planning permission via the local authority would take at least 28 weeks. The HO advised they are unsure of the planning process but would advised once known which route will be taken.
– The Wethersfield Clerk asked for a formal response on the 4 points raised to the Home Office in its statement dated 26 June 2026. The Home Office advised that now you have asked for a formal reply, we will review this and come back to you.
– A Councillor raised the point that they had no confidence in the numbers proposed and that problems will occur as we have seen in the past, when two parish councils formally made a statement of no confidence in the Home Office. The HO advised that catering may go to 24/7 again to alleviate problems and more shared facilities will be brought on site.
– A Councillor raised concerns of posts he has seen on social media recently with heavy goods vehicles entering the site. The HO advised this was for refurbishment work on the drain interceptors.
– An ECC Councillor asked the HO if they/the Government are aware that this is an orchestrated invasion of the UK with small boats crossing from France. That there is nothing being done to stop this, and that there is no democracy in its governance. The Leader of ECC was not even informed of this decision. The HO refused to comment.
– An ECC Councillor raised concerns of the site’s remoteness, and were the Government actually aware that it is in the middle of nowhere. The HO confirmed that both the previous and current Minister had visited the site.
– A BDC Councillor asked that 90% of the site which is unused be released now back to the community to start alternative plans. The HO said this was a good point and would look into this.
